The trend these days is to embrace your natural self. More and more people are electing to go with the natural look, instead of covering up their beautiful skin with makeup.
One study from the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology indicated that people highly prefer photos of people wearing less makeup. It indicated that society, as a whole, has a misconception when it comes to understanding what other people find attractive about faces. It’s time we start to pay attention to what others think of as attractive!
Your best bet for showing off your beautiful skin is to be comfortable with it yourself! Don’t hide your skin. Embrace your tiny flaws, and highlight your best features using a simplistic approach. It is possible to make the most of your natural beauty without wearing a ton of makeup.
Take Care of Your Skin to Keep It Beautiful
Sounds really simple, right?! But most people seeking advice on looking beautiful are seeking makeup tips. (Don’t worry, that’s coming.) But the truth of the matter is no amount of makeup can completely cover all of your skin flaws. The best way to showcase your beautiful skin is to keep it looking beautiful in the first place!
Eat Well for Beautiful Skin
You hear advice all the time urging you to stay well-hydrated and to eat a well-balanced diet rich in lots of different colors and textures. There’s a lot to be said for eating healthy. Keeping your skin looking beautiful starts from within.
“I tell my patients that what they put in their mouths is as important as the products they apply on their skin,” says Dr. Jessica Wu (dermatologist and creator of Dr. Jessica Wu Skincare), who’s written her own guide to eating for beauty, Feed Your Face. “Foods get digested and broken down into vitamins, minerals and amino acids that your body can use to build healthy skin. If you crash diet or eat highly processed foods, your skin won’t be as strong and supple as it could be. For example, if you don’t eat enough protein, you are depriving your skin of the amino acids that go into making collagen (which makes your skin strong) and elastic tissue (which makes it supple).”
Skin cells are mostly made up of water, so if you’re dehydrated, your skin will look and feel dry, too. “Drink lots of water to plump the skin from the inside,” says Pittsburgh-based makeup artist Patty Bell.
Follow a Routine Built for Your Skin
You’re looking to showcase your natural face, so taking proper care of your skin should be your top priority. There’s a lot to be said for showing your skin some TLC. Your daily habits have a big impact on what you ultimately see in the mirror.
Your twice-a-day facial care routine will go a long way towards making the time you spend in front of your mirror with a makeup brush far easier. At the very least, your regimen should consist of:
- Cleansing: washing your face
- Toning: balancing the skin
- Moisturizing: hydrating and softening the skin
Makeup Your Day
Your prep work starts when you first wash your face. If you’ve done your job there, the rest should be easy.
Prime Your Skin
A light facial primer will work to give your skin a little extra hydration and help it hold the makeup better. “When the skin is fully prepped then you don’t really need to put a lot of foundation or concealer on; everything becomes minimal,” says celebrity makeup artist Hung Vanngo.
Go Lightly
Put the heavy foundation aside and reach for something lighter with a bit of sheer color like a tinted moisturizer or BB cream. New York esthetician and makeup artist, Mary Schook advises, “Applying your makeup with your fingers or makeup sponges instead of brushes will also create a more natural look.” Apply your concealer after your base layer so you won’t need to use as much of it.
Powder
The key here, too, is to go lightly. Dust on just over your oily areas, and blend well. According to Vanngo, blending is the key to seamless makeup, and it takes practice. He recommends using a combination of fingers and a brush.
Choose Your Color
Work with the tones of your skin, not against them. Look for something that matches your natural flush, like after you’ve been exercising. Another option would be to use your lip tone as a guide. Vanngo suggests, “it’s basically just about choosing the right neutral colors so that there is nothing that pops.” Avoid anything with a lot of shimmer or sparkle, which can make you come off as overdone.
You’re Blushing!
“Blend a dot of the blush into areas where the sun would fall on your face — apples of your cheeks, chin, forehead, and bridge of the nose,” recommends Schook. Keep it light to achieve a natural rosy glow.
The Eyes Say It
Using a shadow on your lids can still look natural. Schook advises, “Just use cream shadows in skin-tone-friendly shades instead of powders that can sit on the skin and make it look like you are wearing makeup.” You’re just looking to highlight your eyes and bring out a little definition to your crease.
Curl your lashes then wipe them with a single coat of brown or dark brown lengthening mascara. It’s the fastest and easiest way to brighten your eyes and show off their natural sparkle. You’re only looking to add a little contrast here, not drama.
Illumination!
Use a highlighter or illuminator to create a fresh, dewy look. Dab it onto the tops of your cheekbones, bridge of the nose, brow bones, chin, and cupid’s bow.
Pucker Up
Fill in your full lip with liner, and go over your outer lip line. Also apply your lipstick just a little over the top of the lip line, giving the illusion of a fuller lip. Vanngo advises, “You should also try using creamier lipsticks, instead of matte, because matte lipstick really defines where your lips end. That means that if you overdraw your lips and then use a matte lipstick you can see that you’ve faked it. But when you use a creamy lipstick it’s glossy on the top which hides the liner.”
Or, for a lighter look, swipe a lip gloss in a color just one shade brighter than your natural lip color.
Remember, this is all about showing off your beautiful skin! Don’t be ashamed to flash those freckles, and highlight your gorgeous eyes! Let your natural, glowing, radiance shine through!
