Spotlight on Your Pores

If you walk down any single skincare aisle there will be several products that are promoted as targeting the pores on your face to improve your complexion. The pores of your skin are not an easy thing to understand though. There is a lot of false information on the web concerning them. However, in order to understand how to have healthy skin and how to best cleanse the skin, you do have to understand your pores.

Types of Skin Pores

Spotlight on Your Pores

It is not often talked about, but there is more than one type of pore on the skin. The term pore is used to describe the small openings in the skin through which oil and sweat reach the surface from the glands below. You actually have two different types of pores: oil pores and sweat pores.
Oil pores: These are also known as your hair follicles. You have these all over, except for the skin on the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet. If you look at these two areas, it is visibly obvious that the surface of the skin here looks very different than that of your face. It’s the oil pores that capture most of our attention because they can be large enough to be seen. When people talk about having large pores or blocked pores, they are typically referring to the oil pores.
Sweat pores: You also have sweat pores over your entire skin. Sweat pores are very small. This is one reason that they are not talked about much. We cannot usually see them, therefore we do not usually have a problem with them.

How Pores Work

Now that the types of pores have been explained, it is time to understand what it is that a pore does for you and your skin. Your pores actually have a very important job. The hair follicle allows the oil generated by the sebaceous glands, or oil glands, to reach the surface and lubricate the skin. The skin’s natural oil, called sebum, helps keep the skin moisturized. You don’t want to stop production of sebum or shrink away pores. It is important to keep them functioning normally to have healthy skin.
Sweat pores work in much of the same way. These specific pores allow for sweat to travel from the sweat glands to the surface of the skin. Sweat helps you maintain your body temperature by evaporative cooling. There are two types of sweat glands. The eccrine glands produce most of your sweat. The apocrine glands in your armpits and groin produce a thicker and oilier type of sweat that is prone to causing body odor.

What can make pores larger?

Pore size is largely determined by genetics and doesn’t change much over time, but there are some things that can increase pore size:
  • Sun damage: Repeated exposure to UV rays can damage the collagen and elastic tissue in the skin, which can increase the size of pores.
  • A clog: In some cases, a clogged pore can actually change the size of the pore by overstretching the elastin and collagen around it. Most of the time, if a clog is removed quickly and correctly, the pore will go back to its original size.
  • Popping a pimple: While it may seem harmless, popping a pimple or performing an extraction the wrong way can damage the pore and cause deeper clogs. This can sometimes result in a permanent expansion of the pore.

Can you shrink your pores?

Now, this claim is where most of the false thoughts and information concerning the pores come from. Most of the time when people talk about shrinking pore size, what they are actually talking about is clearing pores and removing clogs. This can reduce the appearance of pores, making them less noticeable to the naked eye. Another aspect to consider is that pores do not have muscles that can contract or relax to open or close them.
While physically shrinking pores is not a realistic goal, minimizing pore appearance is a little easier. One of the best ways to clear, and therefore minimize, a pore is by using exfoliating ingredients that can reach deep into the pore and remove any buildup of oil, dead skin cells or bacteria.
