Provitamin B5 and Your Skin

When purchasing skin care products, the long lists of ingredients on the packages might turn you away. Wondering about these ingredients is smart. So many products are packed full of damaging ingredients, or even filler ingredients. Provitamin B5 has become a popular part of many skin care products and below you can find out why.

What is a provitamin?

There is a difference between a regular vitamin and a provitamin. A vitamin is an organic compound, needed in small quantities in order for the human body to be sustained properly throughout life. Most vitamins come from food intake. The only other way we receive vitamins is through a supplement tablet, capsule or powder. We need vitamins because our bodies do not produce enough of them to keep us healthy.
A provitamin is different though. A provitamin is a substance that must be converted within the body into a vitamin. When a bottle states that the pill is a “provitamin”, this means that the substance has little to no actual vitamin activity. However, once the pill is ingested it will be converted by the body and within the body into a substance that does have vitamin activity. For example, provitamin A is the name for B-carotene. This only has about one-sixth the biological activity of retinol vitamin A. The body uses an enzyme that it produces within itself to convert B-carotene to retinol. Another way to say this is that both B-carotene and retinol are considered to be different forms of vitamin A.

What is provitamin B5?

A lot of the time provitamin B5 is written in ingredient sections of skincare products as dexpanthenol, d-panthenol or dl-panthenol. So if this is a product you are looking for, be sure to check for all of these names.

What does provitamin B5 do for the skin?

This vitamin has the ability to work as a humectant. Natural humectants serve dual purposes. They are able to physically attract moisture to the surface of the skin and they deliver major moisture and nutrients to the deepest layers of the skin. Some humectants can improve the skin’s natural ability to hydrate itself. Provitamin B5 is a humectant and is a water-binding substance that both attracts and retains water.
As a humectant, this provitamin stabilizes the skin’s barrier function, reducing the amount of water that is lost through the skin and evaporated into the air. By applying this to your face, you will do several things for your skin. One benefit is increasing the skin’s hydration. You will also be improving your skin’s softness and elasticity. This makes the provitamin B5 ideal for the treatment of dry, scaly or rough skin.
When products such as lotions, creams or ointments containing provitamin B5 are absorbed by the skin, the provitamin transforms into vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid). This has a natural ability to moisturize, soothe, heal and regenerate the skin.
This vitamin goes beyond moisturizing. It is also able to act as a skin healer and protectant. When applied to the skin it offers relief from possible itchiness and pain. It also reduces redness. Wounds that are treated with vitamin B5 have resulted in regenerated tissue that is more solid and elastic.
A study reported in 2002 by the “Journal of Dermatological Treatment” noted that provitamin B5 enhanced the repair of the skin barrier while reducing inflammation at the same time. Another randomized trial involved 246 women who used moisturizers containing provitamin B5 for ten weeks total. Out of all the participants, 207 saw improvements after using B5 in their moisturizers. These 207 women equal 84% of everyone involved. Their skin texture was evaluated after ten weeks and it was found that skin tone was markedly improved after the use of provitamin B5. The barrier function of the skin was also examined and there was a stabilization result for this aspect of the skin as well.
