How to Build a Personalized Skin Care Routine

Having great skin is not a simple matter of DNA. In fact, almost every single thing you do is going to affect the look and feel of your skin. From food and beverage choices to the degree of sun exposure your skin receives, you influence the tone and texture of your skin. While there are an enormous number of skincare products on the shelves, what you end up using depends on many factors. You might decide to use a certain product because your favorite magazine recommended it, or because a close friend of yours has seen skin improvements while using the product. There are hundreds of opinions on each and every skincare product and method that exists today. Here are some things you should keep in mind while sorting through your many options to decide on a set of skincare steps that really work for you.

Three main skincare steps

Skincare routines are a process that can be broken into steps. This makes it much easier when searching for products to try and when using the products. Not only can we break this down into steps, but we can focus on a few things that skin really craves. To begin, think of your skincare routine as consisting of the following three steps:
  • Cleansing – Cleansing the skin is the actual act of washing the face, which sounds simple, but there are actually some common mistakes that are made. First, be sure that the water you are using is not too hot, which will aggravate the skin, leaving your face red and irritated. Make sure the water is lukewarm and easy to touch. If you wear makeup, be sure that you are using a cleanser that is able to remove the makeup. An oil-based cleanser will usually work best. For the most part, substances dissolve similar substances, so oil-based makeup will be best removed by oil-based cleansers. If you use a water-based cleanser a lot of makeup will remain on your skin. After washing your face, always use a clean towel to pat your face dry. Never rub your face to dry it because that will irritate the skin. Gently pat your skin dry.
  • Toning – Choose a skin toner that suits your skin type. Otherwise, the pH balance of your facial skin could be disturbed which could lead to further skin irritation and problems. Toners work best when applied with a soft cotton pad. Always avoid your mouth and eyes when applying the toner. It should also be applied in a patting motion. Never wipe the toner onto your face. Again, this will irritate the skin. Be sure to pat the product gently into the skin. Toner will remove any leftover contaminants from your skin that your cleansing process might have missed. It helps to prepare the skin for the moisturizers that you will apply next. This is why following these steps in order is so important.
  • Moisturizing – Keeping the skin hydrated couldn’t be more important. A very high percentage of your skin is water, which functions inside cells but also in the matrix surrounding the cells. Having dehydrated skin can leave your face feeling tight and uncomfortable and your skin can become cracked and flaky. Surprisingly, oiliness may be a symptom of dehydrated skin as it overcompensates for the lack of moisture by producing more sebum than necessary. Most skin types fall into dry, oily or combination categories. If you have dry skin you need a moisturizer to help attract and retain moisture, if you have oily skin you need to use an oil-free moisturizer and if you have combination skin you have a much wider range of options. When you apply your facial cream, use enough to completely cover every area of the face. Rub the product gently into the skin in an even application. Also, when applying moisturizer, include your neck. Moisturizing twice a day is a good practice to develop.

The main goal of any skincare routine is to fine-tune the complexion of the skin and to keep it hydrated and healthy. This is the case if there are no other major problems you are trying to address. For instance, if you suffer from acne, the products you use might be more geared toward acne-prone skin. You will most likely still follow the above steps, but the products you use will differ in ingredients.
It is important to remember when beginning a skincare routine that nothing is instant. Even though the science behind skincare products has come a very long way in recent years, there is still no instant fix for any skincare problem. Be sure to follow the steps every single day and above all remember to give it time. Be patient with your skin and you will reap the benefits of a consistent skincare routine.
