Spotlight on Niacinamide

Niacinamide does it all: reduces fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmented spots, red blotches, skin sallowness, and increases elasticity. But what is it exactly, and how should you be using it? Read on for more information!

What Is It?

Niacinamide, also known as nicotinamide, is a water-soluble component of the vitamin B complex group. Topical application of niacinamide proves effective in treating the skin via reduced transepidermal water loss. Studies reveal that 2% niacinamide is even more effective than petrolatum in reducing water loss from skin and increasing its moisture levels!
Not only does niacinamide hydrate the skin, but it can also help fight acne! Niacinamide has similar results to other popular acne-fighting ingredients like clindamycin, but may be preferable because bacteria tend to re-emerge after a period of antibacterial agent use. You do not have to worry about that with niacinamide.
For those with acne, you know that often times it can leave behind spots and scars. Niacinamide can help! According to a 2002 study by Hakozaki et. al. topically applied 2% niacinamide (and SPF) can significantly decrease hyperpigmentation and increase skin lightness after 4 weeks of use. Unlike hydroquinone (another popular lightening agent), niacinamide does not decrease hyperpigmentation by inhibiting tyrosinase catalyzation of melanin production. Niacinamide reduces hyperpigmentation in a pigmented reconstructed epidermal (PREP) model by inhibiting 35–68% of melanosome transfer from melanocytes to keratinocytes (skin cells). In concentrations of at least 2%, niacinamide provides an effective method in decreasing hyperpigmentation!

Using Niacinamide in Your Routine

Clarifying Serum is the latest breakthrough in skincare treatments because it effectively and gently solves multiple complex problems, including blemishes, dark spots, oily, dehydrated and dull skin – all at once. The high concentration of potassium azeloyl diglycinate not only fades dark spots and brightens dull areas, but it also eliminates blemish formations. Exfoliating agents, mandelic acid and capryloyl salicylic acid, penetrate deeply into pores to accelerate exfoliation, balance oil production and stimulate cell renewal. With high potency hyaluronic acid and effective antioxidants, including nicotinamide (vitamin B3) and pro-vitamin B5, the skin is protected against collagen loss, hyperpigmentation, dehydration, and new formations of fine lines and wrinkles. This product also contains botanical ingredients proven to calm the skin and prevent redness and irritations.
